Margaret Newman, FAIA is currently the Executive Director of the Municipal Art Society of New York (MAS). At MAS, Ms. Newman provides leadership for the advocacy, planning and community engagement projects that are the core mission of the organization. Current projects include: Penn 2023, exploring a new development plan for this important transit hub and the surrounding neighborhood; 21st Century preservation and parameters for new development, new considerations surrounding New York’s civic assets; the Rebuild by Design competition and other resiliency work; and participation in urban global initiatives.

Prior to joining MAS, Ms. Newman served as Chief of Staff at the NYC Department of Transportation (DOT) where she provided direction for major agency projects including the capital construction plan for Times Square, and design oversight with a focus on sustainable design. In private professional architectural practice for 15 years, Ms. Newman was a partner in Marren and Newman Architects, a multidisciplinary architecture and design firm located in NYC.
